Intervention

A range of intervention approaches can be provided by Peace of Mind to address a range of developmental difficulties such as:

Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential learning approach which promotes the development of life skills.  We work with horses or ponies to develop skills such as communication, self-awareness, self-management, decision making, problem-solving emotional regulation, teamwork and trust amongst many others.  Sessions are carefully planned to work on specific areas that are most relevant to the client.  Equines are very attuned to their environment and the people around them.  They can therefore provide unique feedback that helps people to learn more about themselves and their approach to life.

At Peace of Mind we adapt EAL when working with our younger children and those with significant communication difficulties.  Sessions are highly structured, and a more direct teaching approach is used which is aimed at developing the foundations for learning, such as attention and concentration, engagement and communication skills.  Visuals are used to support our clients throughout their sessions.  Sensory sessions can be provided on request where clients can avail of the sensory room, engage in grooming and hand grooming and complete a sensory story or a sensory craft activity.

We also provided joint Speech and Language Therapy and EAL sessions, where we use the movement of the ponies to relax and engage children to give them the best opportunity to develop their language and communication skills.

Friends Resilience

Friends Resilience is recommended by the World Health Organisation as an evidence-based intervention that is effective in reducing anxiety and managing low mood.  The programme is CBT based and can be delivered individually or in small groups.  The programme is delivered over 10 hourly sessions with activities to work on between each session to practice and consolidate new skills.

Lego Therapy

Lego Therapy is a fun and engaging intervention which targets the development of communication and social skills.  Children work in small groups where they can develop skills such as describing items, following and delivering instructions, taking turns, waiting, negotiating and assuming different roles in a group setting.
